Not everything handed down by early tradition should be accepted without examination. The age of a claim does not automatically make it true, and writings outside Scripture do not carry the same authority as Scripture itself.
We should also avoid saying more than the text says. We often hear expressions such as, “John says...” or “John writes...”. But if the Gospel does not name its writer, and the identification of that writer with John, the son of Zebedee, comes from tradition, is such certainty really justified?
The essential question remains: what does Scripture say?
